sanergy insect farming project

Sanergy was one of the finalists for the Earthshot Prize (earthshotprize.org). They reached the top 3 in their category!

“The Earthshot Prize is the most ambitious and prestigious of its kind – designed to incentivise change and help to repair our planet over the next ten years.”

Prince William of the Royal United Kingdom family promotes this award, which will air live on BBC TV and feature performances by world artists like Ed Sheeran and Coldplay. Showcasing black soldier fly farming on such a large stage is a fantastic achievement, highlighting it as an effective way to build a waste-free world.

History

In 2009, MIT researchers David Auerbach, Lindsay Stradley, and Ani Vallabhaneni took on the challenge of solving a poverty issue affecting over 1 billion people worldwide. They created a full value chain approach to tackle the sanitation crisis, providing a sustainable solution for urban slums.

With that project, Sanergy was born.

In 2019 this resulted in giving approval to build a large scale Black Soldier Fly production facility and to expend the BSF breeding facility. The new production facility can process 200 tons of waste streams per day. Meaning a significant 73.000 tons per year! The facility has been taken into production in 2020.

Waste streams like for example:
• Sanitation waste
• House hold waste
• Fruit and vegetable waste

Sanergy processes various waste streams, such as sanitation waste, household waste, and fruit and vegetable waste. In addition, the company processes the material daily at a centralized facility, turning it into valuable end products such as insect-based animal feed and organic fertilizer.

Furthermore, the ZOEM racks and related machinery actively support Black Soldier Fly production. All growing rooms feature full insulation and climate control. Moreover, the processing area includes a large sorting and drying installation. As a result, Sanergy maintains full control over breeding, production, and processing.

Finally, Sanergy serves as a beautiful example of a progressive company that hasn’t been afraid to take bold steps and become a market leader. At Insect Engineers, we have enjoyed collaborating closely with the people of Sanergy to realize this project. Looking forward, we will continue working together to achieve their new company goals and a promising future.
